Scenic 30-A: Cottage Charm Giveaway WINNER

I wasn’t entirely sure I’d get to this so soon but I’ve felt the suspense building all day. Not among the entrants, by the way, but among… me, myself and I. Even I had to know who won this painting.

First of all, thanks to all of you who entered my humble giveaway! This has been so much fun for me! If I could afford it, I’ve had a giveaway every single day. I read each comment and I’ve visited every blog and website left for me. (In fact, I’ve added so many new bookmarks to my browser, I’ve had to set aside time to reorganize the folder. Oh, the untold additional hours I’ll be whiling away on the web now visiting your blogs!)

And the winner is…

Nina  – May 28, 2010 at 10:28 AM

Congratulations, Nina! Please click here to email me your mailing address and I will ship “Beaches of 30-A” to you as soon as I can find a box big enough. (And please send me a photo of it hanging it its permanent home. I can’t wait to see what you do with it!)

As for the very unscientific results of my very unscientific poll, California was edged out by Paris as the most popular response to the question: “If you could have a destination blind from any city/area in the world, what city/area would you choose?” Had I lumped in other places in France with Paris, it would have been a blowout. Top six destinations were, in order:

  1. Paris
  2. California
  3. Italy
  4. London
  5. Ireland
  6. Cape Cod & Texas (tie)

Your comments were so great to read and gave me lots of new places to fantasize about visiting when our kids are grown and I’m too old and crabby to enjoy traveling.

In the meantime, I’m contenting myself with creating new destination blinds for places I love and the places I long to see. One of my favorite parts of the giveaway was discovering that two commentors mentioned a destination blind I’d already designed but not yet painted. Great minds think alike!

Here’s a sneak peak, a blind listing homes figuring prominently in Jane Austen novels:

I hope to have a few of these ready to sell to other Austenophiles at my next market.

Once again, thanks again to all of you who entered the giveaway! And special thanks to Kim at Twice Remembered Cottage for sponsoring such a great “get-together” for her blogging community!

A Little Overlap

I can’t believe the Twice Remembered Cottage Charm Giveaway has been going on for almost a month! Just a reminder: my giveaway ends tomorrow, so if you haven’t entered, get on the stick. You can view my giveaway here and review all the Cottage Charm giveaways here.

And in other news, I’m kicking off the 3-Day Potty Training method with my 2 1/2 year old this weekend — actually, in about 10 minutes — so my posting will be spotty (ba-dum-bum) for a few days. It may take me until Monday or Tuesday to announce the giveaway winner due to the overlap. I wish the end of the giveaway hadn’t followed so closely with Memorial Day but the potty training opportunity presented by a four-day weekend was too fortuitous to ignore.

Some women may be brave enough to tackle potty training without husbandly backup. Not this girl.

In the meantime, thank you to the members of our armed forces for their dedicated service! Have a great Memorial weekend.

Scenic 30-A: Cottage Charm Giveaway

While I was in college, I was very fortunate to spend two summers working in Destin, Florida.

These were very formative summers for me, not the least because they served as a proving ground for a budding romance with the man who eventually became my husband.

I worked at the Customer Service counter of a grocery store — which is quite the place to be in the middle of tourist season, I can tell you. Among some of my more momentous life lessons and experiences:

  • I met Amy Grant.
  • I learned to distinguish at least three distinct variations of Mississippi Southern accent.
  • I rode out two major tropical storms.
  • I had a pregnant woman go into labor while I was ringing up her groceries — and then refuse my offer of help to load her car.
  • I learned to intuit with astonishing accuracy the type of cigarettes preferred by almost any given customer. It’s amazing how certain types of people gravitate to certain brands.
  • I sold liquor illegally. (I had to relieve the liquor store clerk for her break one day. The store manager apparently didn’t realize I wasn’t 21 at the time.)
  • I learned that the thrill of a four-hour, deep sea fishing cruise is greatly diminished by the sensation — not to mention odor — of baiting your hook with squid. Like neoprene rubber covered in snot. Gross.
  • It was the general consensus of the locals that Roy Scheider is a creep. I’m just telling you what I heard.

Nevertheless, I have a very soft place in my heart for the Redneck Riviera.

If you share my admiration for white, sugar sand beaches and blue waters, I hope you’ll enjoy this contribution to  Kim’s Fourth Annual Cottage Charm Giveaway.

Included in this giveaway is “Beaches of Scenic 30-A,” an original, destination blind-style painting featuring twelve of South Walton’s most beautiful beaches, painted on 12″ x 24″ canvas in a beautiful gray-green acrylic and then distressed for that beachy appeal.

(Sorry about the crummy photos. This is the best I could do on a rainy day…)

Villages listed include: Dune Allen, Santa Rosa Beach, Blue Mountain Beach, Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, Seagrove Beach, WaterSound, Seacrest, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach and Inlet Beach.

I had to share a giveaway going on at The Old Painted Cottage — not only because its one of my favorite design sites but also because I am in love with the prize. Check out these fantastic Ruffled Burlap Table Runners:

I love the contrast of harsh burlap sculpted into a soft, feminine ruffle. Unity of opposites.

Stamp Tramp GIVEAWAY

[UPDATE: I feel I should clarify, my very gentlemanly husband does not go around calling women names or referring to their tattoos. The only time this phrase ever comes up is when we're watching Cars. For the 6,492nd time.]

My husband has certain words and phrases that he has a hard time saying — which is not at all unusual, I realize. But it strikes me as funny that he’s consistent — the same words seem to get mangled.

So instead of referring to a woman’s lower back tattoo as a “tramp stamp,” he transposes.

It becomes the “stamp tramp.”

This week, I guess that’s me.

I’ve always loved those extra-large address stamps that are so popular these days, but I was never really into the idea of shelling out $60 for something that wasn’t 100% custom. None of the designs available were very “me,” and for that amount of money, I figured I should at least get a stamp that is “me.”

So I designed my own:

[No, that's not my real address. Thank you, Photoshop.]

I use Adobe Illustrator but most any design program that allows you to save your design as  JPEG, GIF or PNG file will do. Once you’ve completed the design, search the internet for “custom rubber stamps” and then send your design to the stamp manufacturer of your choice.

A couple of design tips:

  1. Feel free to mix fonts within one design but don’t go overboard. For a design this size, I like to use no more than two fonts, usually one Serif or Script font with one complimentary Sans Serif font.
  2. Very thin fonts aren’t well-suited to rubber stamps, but if you like the look of a font and want to make it work, trying setting it to bold or adding a .25 or .50 pt outline.
  3. If you’re designing a return address stamp, keep the address in a clear, simple font. The Post Office will thank you.
  4. Feel free to use simple graphics in the design but don’t choose graphics that include grayscale shading.
  5. Large areas of ink won’t stamp uniformly and may leave “holidays,” so keep that in mind. If you dislike the mottled look of holidays, avoid large areas of solid black and lines that are too thick.

Most stamp manufacturers will offer art mounted stamps (the kind used with a stamp pad) of virtually any size. However, if you prefer a self-inking stamp like the one pictured above, I’ve listed some brands and model numbers below to help you in your search:

1 5/8″ SQUARE:

  • Trodat 4924
  • Cosco Q43
  • Ideal 5742

1 5/8″ ROUND:

  • Cosco R40
  • Ideal 400R
  • Trodat 46040
  • Trodat 4924 Circular

I’ll be having a booth at the our local Spring Market in April and planned on selling, among other fun things, custom address stamps. However, I feel like I should have more than one example of my designs so people can see the options available. But since these will be custom stamps, I don’t want to waste my time designing eight different versions for “Jane Doe” or “Sally Smith” of Anytown, USA.

Giveaway, anyone?

PRIZE:

Winner receives one Custom Design suitable for an address stamp. You may choose your design shape:

  • Square (1 5/8″ x 1 5/8″)
  • Round (1 5/8″)
  • Oblong (1″ x 2 3/4″)

I will work with you to create a design that fits your style and personality, drawing from 1,500+ fonts and hundreds of graphic icons. Once complete, I will send you JPEG, PNG and GIF files of your design, for your unlimited, royalty-free use. As in, if you decide to tattoo the design on your lower back, you don’t owe me a dime.

Note: This giveaway includes only the design, not the stamp itself. (My blog is not one of those nifty, ad-supported ones and my hubby would freak. And then disconnect my computer.) However, if you would like to purchase a stamp, you can send the digital artwork to any reputable stamp company or I can order one for you at cost.

MORE PRIZES:

In a traditional giveaway, your odds of winning go down as the number of entries goes up. Which leaves you little incentive to invite your friends to enter. I thought I’d up the ante.

  • If more than 50 people enter, I’ll give away a 2nd Custom Design.
  • If more than 100 people enter, I’ll give away a 3rd Custom Design.
  • I cannot imagine it going beyond that, but, if by some crazed circumstance, even more people enter, I will give away another Custom Design for every 200 entries after that.

So go forth and multiply.

TO ENTER:

Leave a comment describing your monogram style. Would yours be Traditional? Modern? Retro? Cutesy? Something else? (I won’t hold you to that description if you win, so don’t panic.)

One entry per person, please. Don’t forget: if you’re commenting anonymously, include an email address so I can notify you if you win.

Giveaway will close March 17th at 9:00 AM (CST). Winners will be selected by random drawing.

Good luck!

COMMENTS CLOSED. THANKS TO THOSE WHO ENTERED! I’ll announce winners soon.
